America more or less gained a sense of a homey feeling when Katie Couric became the first female anchor of the CBS Evening News in 2006, but after five years, management and viewers weren’t convinced. So we are left with Scott Pelley. While I won’t get into him or why I can’t fathom the amount of criticism that Katie has received here, I will say that when we lost James Horner, the maestro behind this glorious piece, it was a collective and tragic loss for America. This theme embodies the Americana spirit that basically the broadcast under Katie’s tenure as Managing Editor was trying to convey, which is why I miss her in that chair.
James had never worked in television before so this was a challenge, but one he took on head on and came out a champion. I truly miss him.
